Corporate Responsibility
Corporate Responsibility is one of the basic principles of company management at Merck and therefore also firmly established in our strategy. At Merck Singapore we focus on the areas environment, education, and health.
Climate Protection and CO2 Reduction
In addition to supporting our global climate programmes, we have established our own initiatives at Merck Singapore.
Eco-Office Certificate
Clean our own backyard first. Internally we established a range of initiatives to reduce our own carbon footprint significantly. Getting the Eco-Office Certificate from the Singapore Environment Council shows thet we're on the right way. At the same time, the Certicate is also an obligation to do even more. With various activities we try to reach out to raise awareness for climate change and promote environment protection.
Merck CO2 Challenge
Reaching out to our customers and business partners in the chemicals industry we have designed the MerckCO2Challenge, a race format that invites companies to form teams for a race with the total distance of 20 km. For each km we are donating into our Merck Singapore Environment Fund to plant trees in schools all over Singapore for example. For more information, please visit: www.merck-chemicals.sg
Gocycle Recycling Programme
This unique initiative from our Merck Serono division gives doctors and young parents the chance to contribute to protect our earth for future generations and at the same time raise funds for a good cause. We organise the professional recycling of the Gonal-f prefilled pens, and for each collected pen we donate 75 cents to our cooperation partner Children's Aid Society, Singapore.
Education
We support the Children’s Aid Society who is managing Melrose Home, a supportive environment for children between the ages of 4 to 18 years old, who require care and protection in a residential setting. These are children whose parents or family members are unable to provide care or to supervise them. In 2011, in addition to organising educational workshops, we will help them set-up a new room and new facilities in line with the expansion of the home.
Health
We prefer to see healthy people and not patients. Awareness is a key factor for healthy lifestyle. In the areas of our expertise we therefore organize public forums and education seminars with free bllod screenings. In addition, we support campaigns such as the Thyroid Awareness Week or the Race against Cancer. We are also actively involved in promoting sport. Our Consumer Healthcare division is one of the main sponsors of the Sundown Marathon, and the management supports and encourages our employees to represent Merck at the various sport events in Singapore. For example, we have our own corporate team at the OCBC Cycle. In 2010 we got awarded with the Singapore Health Award in bronze by the Health Promotion Board.
